What to expect from Apple’s big event

Apple is expected to unveil a slate of new gadgets at a splashy event at its California headquarters on Wednesday — including upgraded versions of the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods.

The event, which Apple has titled “Far Out,” will be live-streamed starting at 1 pm EST — but the rumor mill has already been churning for weeks.

    Here’s what to expect:

    New iPhone 14

Apple’s new phone, the iPhone 14, will have four models including a smaller, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, as well as the larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max, according to Bloomberg.

The high-end Pro and Pro Max models will see the most eye-catching upgrades, according to the outlet, including an ultra-sharp 48 megapixel camera, a faster chip called the A16 and an “always-on” display.

The “always-on” feature means that users will be able to glance at their phones to see quick information like the time and new messages without pressing any buttons, similarly to the Apple Watch, Bloomberg reported.

The notch at the top of the iPhone Pro and Pro Max screen will reportedly be smaller, and the devices will be slightly sleeker with longer battery life.

The cheaper iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models, meanwhile, are also expected to feature improved cameras.

The phones will go on sale Sept. 16, about a week earlier than normal, according to Bloomberg.

    High-end Apple Watch

The Tim Cook-helmed company is also expected to announce a new “Pro” edition of the Apple Watch, leaked renderings show.

The higher-end digital timepiece will be targeted at athletes like marathon runners and mountain bikers and will retail from between $900 and $1,000, according to Bloomberg.

Renderings leaked to Indian gadget site 91mobiles show the device boasting a titanium casing, a bigger battery and larger screen that can display fitness data than current versions of the Apple Watch.

Bloomberg reported that the Apple Watch Pro will mark an attempt by Apple to compete with Garmin, which sells high-end smartwatches for as much as $1,500.

Two other Apple Watches will also be revealed Wednesday, including a new lower-end Apple Watch SE and flagship Series 8, according to the outlet.

Both devices will feature incremental hardware upgrades, while the Series 8 and Pro models will introduce a body temperature sensor and fertility-related women’s health features, according to Bloomberg.

    AirPods

While details are light on Apple’s plan for its headphones lineup, Bloomberg reported that a new version of its AirPods Pro earbuds will be unveiled on Wednesday.

The current version of the AirPods Pro, which sell for $250 and feature noise cancelling and spatial audio capabilities, has not been upgraded since 2019.

The AirPods Pro 2 could potentially feature a new processor, higher quality sound and a charging case that can play a sound when an owner search for it through Apple’s Find My app, according to the Verge.
